About

Welcome to the Italian Citizen Science portal

An online space created by the community, for the community, dedicated to sharing knowledge, tools, training, and resources on citizen science.

Our vision is to become a true Knowledge Hub, supporting the spread of citizen science in Italy and beyond, highlighting the growing role of citizens contributing to research in every scientific field.

Here you will find projects involving the public in research, international resources, organizations active in citizen science, an events calendar, and a news section to engage and collaborate with the community.

If you would like to add something, you can submit your content using the New content button that appears in the top-right menu once you are logged in. And if you have a suggestion, share it with us through the contact form: this portal grows and improves thanks to your contribution as well.

NBFC, CSI and the National Citizen Science Platform

The National Biodiversity Future Center (NBFC) is the scientific and operational reference point for biodiversity in Italy. A qualified community of researchers, technicians, and experts develops advanced protocols and analytical systems here to support biodiversity conservation, monitoring, and restoration, in line with national and European priorities.

The National Citizen Science Platform

Created through a cascading call from NBFC Spoke 3, the platform is designed to make citizen science projects within the Center visible. However, it is open to all scientific disciplines and aims to become a reference point for citizen science in Italy, growing over time with increasingly broad and diverse content.

Collaboration with Citizen Science Italia ETS

The partnership between NBFC and CSI (Citizen Science Italia ETS), formalized through an agreement for the shared management of the platform, represents a strategic element of great value. Through co-design of activities, sharing of scientific expertise, and methodological validation, the collaboration ensures quality and rigor in the evaluation of all hosted projects.

Data and infrastructure for biodiversity

NBFC provides advanced infrastructure for taxon identification through morphological, molecular, and integrated approaches. The synergy with the citizen science platform enriches the Center’s databases thanks to contributions from citizen scientists, while also returning high-value information to them for monitoring, conservation, and restoration activities.

Training and shared scientific culture

The collaboration between NBFC and CSI promotes high-quality training pathways accessible to a wide audience: university students, professionals, teachers, and engaged citizens. The goal is to foster a shared scientific culture and strengthen the connection between research, society, and territory.

The platform is developed by Net7 within the project CITIZEN SCIENCE – CUP B63C22000650007, funded under Mission 4 Component 2 (M4C2) – Investment 1.4 of the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR), with support from the European Union – Next Generation EU through a cascading call from the National Biodiversity Future Center of Siena, Spoke 3 “Assessing and monitoring terrestrial and freshwater biodiversity and its evolution: from taxonomy to genomics and citizen science”.

The project is carried out under the scientific direction of Andrea Sforzi, president of the Citizen Science Italia association.
